Some reading en passant
Jul. 30th, 2025 21:18Finished the Wormwood Trilogy by Tade Thompson a few weeks back, and in retrospect was mostly satisfied by it, although the transition between books 2 and 3 was a bit jarring. For some reason, I pegged one female character's voice as being that of Shohreh Aghdashloo, and it stuck with me. The core setting being rooted in Nigeria was a breath of fresh air in my science fiction reading.
Forced myself to finish Zero Stars, Do Not Recommend by M.J. Wassmer, and I hated the characters for the most part. It's marketed as a social satire, complete with Lord of the Flies comparison, and has therefore suffered from being overtaken by actual US politics. Maybe I'm the wrong audience for this book, and am missing intertextual references.
I've just started on Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, and it's frigging hilarious.
